Nokia on Thursday said that while its global market share rose to 36% in the first quarter from 35% a year earlier, it suffered a "significant" market share decline in North America.
In the region, handset volume collapsed 43% to 4.8 million units. Nokia attributed the decline to delays to the launch of its N75 smart phone as well as to "the excess inventory of certain competitor's products."
Morotola which posted a loss in its latest quarter, recently slashed the price of some of its older handsets such as the Razr in order to get rid of an inventory buildup. Nokia Chief Executive Olli Pekka Kallasvuo told analysts on a conference call on Thursday that he's confident the N75 will hit the U.S. market soon and that delays were mostly due to operator testing.
In particular, he said that a new business model at Verizon Wireless and increased cooperation with Sprint Nextel on a long-range wireless technology called WiMax are unlikely to bear fruit until 2008. "50% of the U.S. market won't see a real impact until 2008," he said. At AT&T, however, the story is a bit different. Kallasvuo believes the benefits of having a research-and-development center dedicated to the design of U.S.-specific products in San Diego is going to bring about higher sales this year.

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global mobile phone shipments grew a sluggish 12 percent year-over-year, to reach 252 million units in Q1 2007. This was the first quarter in almost 2 years that annual growth has been below the 20% mark.
Neil Mawston, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics said, "Worldwide cell phone shipments have been growing at an average annual rate of 25% over the past 6 quarters. While Q1 growth is seasonally slower, the 12 percent growth registered in the first quarter of 2007 is markedly down on that longer-term trend."
Bonny Joy, Analyst at Strategy Analytics, added, "A moderate buildup of inventory in Q4 2006 led to weaker shipments during Q1 2007. We estimate a sizeable 9 million units of excess inventory were sold off worldwide during the first quarter. Looking ahead to the second quarter, we expect more stock to be cleared from channels and the supply chain should eventually return to normal levels early in the second half of the year."
Other findings from Strategy Analytics' Q1 2007 Global Handset Market Share Update report include:
- Nokia widened its market share lead over Motorola to 18 percentage points in Q1 2007. This is the largest gap between the two since Q4 2003;
- Samsung rebounded with strong volumes, while LG strengthened its profit margins. These are tentative signs that the big Korean players are on the verge of a comeback.

It has slipped out that Nokia 8600 codenamed Luna has made it through FCC chambers - first bits of information on this phone were posted in our news feed some time ago. By the looks of it, the 8600 comes armed with a 16 mln colors QVGA-display, A2DP-enabled Bluetooth, and Series 40 platform.
The data provided by FCC is quite poor, but as it's obvious from the tests, the novelty deals at least with GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850 and 1900 MHz. No further information on release date and price of Nokia 8600 is available as of today.
