MWC2011. Motorola: an Array of Products and Comeback Plans

After CES in January Motorola did not announce anything new and their key product at MWC was Xoom. We could only look at it in January, but now it is everywhere in Motorola pavilion. As always the device comes equipped with Android 3.0 without any modifications. Unsurprisingly, the product looks similar to its rivals running the same OS. There are only slight differences in body and hardware. In the segment of tablets we have a similar situation to that of laptops when we get many models with the same OS, while consumers choose what looks nice or costs less. The tablet market is just becoming mature, but the level of standardization is high. On one hand it highlights the demand for products, but at the same time companies cannot offer anything unusual being afraid of coming up with weird products.

I will be brief – my impressions of the product are positive and I could have easily migrated to it, but for my Apple iPad with games and apps installed. Many will be cautious of Android tablets, because there are not enough of games and apps for large screens. The difference between Xoom and Samsung Galaxy 10.1 is not dramatic. You have to choose the body you like and may be pay attention to other features. Both models will appear on the market simultaneously. Xoom is cheaper, but it will be available predominantly in the USA (other markets will get smaller quantities). Xoom is a product for the US market, but it could have made a splash elsewhere.

Another key product is Motorola ATRIX 4G built around NVIDIA Tegra2. I have made a video how to use the device with dock stations. Detailed information is available in our CES articles.

CES 2011. Motorola and original solutions from the future

I was curious about Motorola Gleam, which was developed for those who need a simple phone or are nostalgic about the legendary RAZR. The handset looks attractive, but it is made of plastic. The moment you take Gleam in your hands it becomes clear that the model is inexpensive. It looks much better on photos. Specs are not impressive for 2011 – 2 MP camera, QVGA screen, FM radio and memory cards support. This niche model will not become a bestseller. There is no need to repeat the past success. Consumers need innovations.

The only true new model in Barcelona is Motorola Pro. A QWERTY candybar boasts a touchscreen. It is a tendency of 2011 with similar models to be unveiled by Nokia and Blackberry. They target corporate segments and Motorola is not an exception. The handset belongs to a mid-price range (around €300) and offers 2 GB of memory, a 1 GHz processor together with a 3.1″ screen (320х480). To my mind the screen is not bright enough. It offers standard Android multimedia features, but the screen is inferior to those of rival models. The phone is far from impressive. We have another phone for range expanding and nothing else.
