Review of Bose Bluetooth Headset

In the box:

  • Headset
  • Case
  • Power adapter
  • Power plug
  • USB cable
  • Manual, etc.
  • Extra ear buds

I already wrote a short article about this headset and predicted its success despite the pricing and lack of marketing effort (unlike Jawbone, for example).

Bose Bluetooth Headset

My prediction came true – I could see it in a daily life, when before the holidays many people offered me to sell them the headset for any money. I got it with the help of my friend (Kirill, thank you much again), who purchased it in London. According to him, there was a line in Bose boutique, although they do not have many items for sale. I can only assume the reason was this headset. Bose is in an interesting position – they do not need to turn themselves inside out for a new customer. Anybody who used a single Bose product already has an opinion and I used many. I totally disliked the new stereo headset with earbuds for iPhone – the buds were uncomfortable. However I simply adore the Bose portable stereo systems. I don't particularly fancy the QuietComfort legend, I don't feel a spectacular noise cancelation, but Bose car stereo system already built some level of trust.

Design, build

Continuing with the marketing fairy tales, I have to note a special look of the Bose products, it is distinct. There is not even a hint of special materials, weird shapes or something along these lines. The Bose magic is in the outmost simplicity and somewhat difficult to explain attractiveness. It's a minor detail, but the remote of a stereo system is pleasant to hold in your hand. Even more – these things are actually great to listen to. And (this is normal for Bose products) in case of a headset we deal with a huge box – the headset is small, but the box is very big. It looks like you have a whole set inside. In reality Bose will not spoil you. Only the necessary parts. The headset itself looks unusual. First of all, it is heavy, you can feel the weigh in your hand. Second of all, the design is not that simple – you have angled lines, perforation on the front (it hides a mic). Black, mate plastic is on the front, black shiny one on the back. There is a very well displayed company logo, which is good in this case – everyone should see that you are a cool dude. The design is good and unusual – just in Bose style. It is a totally different from Jawbone, there is no spice here, just calm, classic lines.

So I'm writing all this and thinking – how many people will appreciate a beauty at this price? I assume not too many, but there will be an audience. It could also make a great gift.

Wear and comfort

In reality, the headset can be worn only in the right ear. I see something like this for the first time, here Bose is acting tough, ala Apple – if you'll look at the design you will notice that there is no symmetry. The speaker is made for the right ear, however in the store they will ask you for what ear you need the headset and you can choose one for the left ear if necessary. The earbud fit me right out of the box, the plastic does not even touch the skin, only the silicone. And you do not need to apply any force to fit it into the ear comfortably, it goes right in and sits reliably, you can exercise without a fear it will fall out. The headset is comfortable to be worn all day long. There is a case in the box, I recommend using it – it does not take up much space and protects the product well.

Controls

On the bottom end you see the On/Off switch, depending on its position you see a green or a red stripe. Red means Off. On the top end – multifunctional button and volume controls. All are comfortable to use, have light and positive feel with a confirming click. On the back side are two light indicators, one for the connection status, another will tell you what's going on with the battery. Typical for a Bluetooth headset commands are supported – redial, voice recognition activation, it's all here.

Battery

The declared work time is 4.5 hours of talk time and 174 hours of standby. Not too much. A regular microUSD is used for charging, a flat power adapter can be used with the wall plug or a computer USB port.

Connection to a phone, the quality of sound

The headset was tested with iPhone 4, strangely the phone does not display the level of headset charge as it is normal these days for expensive products. There is an automatic volume adjustment, the second mic and some unique Triport Acoustic Structure add-on, improving the voice quality. Let's not get buried under the technology names. I'd rather wrap up – the headset will not allow you to listen to the music into a single ear, it cannot be connected to 2 phones, but its main task it handles beautifully. You are heard without a problem and you hear the other side without a hitch. The voice is full, natural with every note present. There is no echo, you don't need to yell. For a car it is an ideal solution. For the street – almost, once in a while people asked to repeat what I have just said.

Conclusions

It's a strange headset, I'd love to take a look at a Bose phone – it would probably be nice to hold, great to talk on, but functionality wise it would be behind. This exact strangeness – as if Bose it outside of the market – commands respect and makes me appreciate this product highly. It is as if the creators say to the consumer: we wanted to make a product for those, who care only about the sound quality, design and comfort. If you, our dear reader, nod your head in agreement – Bose Bluetooth Headset is for you.

In London the headset costs £124, the competitor is clear – Jawbone products, from Icon to the latest Era.

I strongly recommend Bose Bluetooth Headset, it is one of the more distinct accessories of the year.
